Notre planète, la matière, la nature… tout est en mouvement autour de nous. Cette évolution permanente se retrouve aussi dans notre corps, dans notre peau. À chaque instant, tout se transforme et se renouvelle. Il faut environ 28 jours pour que les cellules de la peau, appelées kératinocytes, migrent, se différencient et montent vers la surface. Là, elles quittent notre corps pour préserver l’intégrité de notre peau.

Our planet, matter, nature… everything is in motion around us. This continuous evolution is also reflected within our bodies, in our skin. Every moment, everything transforms and renews itself. It takes about 28 days for skin cells, called keratinocytes, to migrate, differentiate, and rise to the surface. There, they leave the body, helping to maintain the integrity of our skin.

L’une des plus petites structures de notre corps, d’environ 8 nanomètres, joue un rôle clé dans tous ces mouvements. Les membranes de nos cellules sont si minuscules qu’il faut un appareil puissant appelé microscope électronique pour en observer les détails… Quel effort et quelle énergie pour voir ces petits éléments ! La composition de ces membranes est très stable, maintenue en équilibre avec 40% de lipides, 50% de protéines et 8% de glucides.

One of the smallest structures in our body, about 8 nanometers in size, is key to all these movements. Our cell membranes are so tiny that a powerful device called an electron microscope is required to see their innermost details… What effort and energy it takes to observe these small elements! The composition of these membranes is very stable, balanced with 40% lipids, 50% proteins, and 8% carbohydrates.

L’une des propriétés fondamentales de nos membranes cellulaires est leur fluidité : elles bougent et se déforment en permanence. La molécule responsable de cette fluidité est le cholestérol, qui est représenté dans mon schéma ci-dessous Alexriolab. Il est important de noter que le cholestérol est uniquement présent chez les animaux ; il n’existe pas chez les plantes ni chez les bactéries.

One of the fundamental properties of our cell membranes is their fluidity: they are constantly moving and changing shape. The molecule responsible for this membrane fluidity is cholesterol, which is shown in my Alexriolab diagram below. It’s important to note that cholesterol is only found in the animal kingdom; plants and bacteria do not contain it.

Cette petite molécule est amphiphile (oui, c’est un très joli nom, n’est-ce pas ?). Cela signifie qu’elle peut se lier à la fois à l’eau et à l’huile. Le cholestérol, entre autres fonctions, garantit toutes les activités essentielles de la membrane : l’absorption, la sécrétion, la protection, la communication, et bien plus encore ! Quelle prouesse pour une si petite molécule 🙂 !

This tiny molecule is amphiphilic (yes, it’s a very nice name, isn’t it?). It means that it can bind to both water and oil. Cholesterol, among other roles, ensures all the vital functions of the membrane: absorption, secretion, protection, communication, and much more! What a feat 🙂 for such a small molecule.
